Why Check Vehicle Insurance Status Online?
Under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, third-party insurance is mandatory for every vehicle in India. Checking your insurance status before you drive saves you from unexpected fines, especially during police checkpoints and automated challan cameras.
Penalties for Driving Without Valid Insurance:
- First offence: Fine of ₹2,000
- Second offence: Fine of ₹4,000 + imprisonment up to 3 months

Insurance Status: What Each Result Means
| Status | Meaning | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Valid | Insurance active, expiry date shown in future. | No action needed. |
| Expired | Insurance has lapsed and provides no coverage. | Renew immediately. |
| Expiring Soon | Less than 30 days remaining on current policy. | Renew now to avoid coverage gap. |
| Not Found | Data not updated in the Vahan database by insurer. | Contact your insurer to update records. |
What to Do If Your Vehicle Insurance is Expired?
If your insurance has lapsed, you are legally prohibited from driving. Beyond the ₹2,000 fine, you face total financial liability for any third-party damages. Follow these steps to restore your coverage safely.
Immediate Steps
- 1. Stop driving the vehicle immediately to avoid police seizure.
- 2. Do not wait for a "grace period"—most insurers do not offer one for motor insurance.
- 3. Check if your policy has lapsed for more than 90 days (you may lose your No Claim Bonus).
Documents Needed
- • Previous (Expired) Policy Document
- • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
- • Odometer Reading (for comprehensive plans)
- • Photographs of the vehicle (if an inspection is required)
How to Renew Your Policy Online
Choose Your Insurer
You can renew with your existing insurer or switch to a new one. Switching is often cheaper if you compare quotes online.
Vehicle Inspection (If Required)
If your policy has been expired for more than a few days, insurers usually require a physical or video inspection of the vehicle to check for existing damages.
Payment & Policy Issuance
Once the inspection is approved (or skipped for Third-Party only plans), pay the premium online. You will receive the digitally signed policy instantly via email.
Pro Tip: Check mParivahan After Renewal
After you receive your new policy, it typically takes 48–72 hours for the data to reflect in the official Vahan database. Always keep a physical or digital copy (DigiLocker) with you until the online status is updated.
Types of Vehicle Insurance in India
Third-Party Insurance Mandatory
Covers damage to other people, vehicles, and property in case of an accident. Does NOT cover your own vehicle damages. This is the minimum legal requirement.
Comprehensive Insurance Recommended
Covers third-party liability PLUS your own vehicle damage resulting from accidents, theft, fire, or natural disasters. Usually 3–5x the cost of third-party.
Zero Depreciation Add-on
An extra cover that pays the full claim amount without deducting depreciation on parts (like plastic or glass). Highly worth getting for new cars.
